SOUTH ATLANTIC SHRINE ASSOCIATION

Minutes of the Spring Meeting

March 19, 2016 – 9:30 am

Inn at Opryland, Nashville, TN

 

Director General Buddy Ellis called the meeting to order at 9:30 am and introduced Ill. Sir Mike Mathew, President. President Mathews led those in attendance in the Shrine Pledge of Allegiance, following the pledge he called on SASA Chaplain, Ill. Sir John Stanley for the invocation.

 
Following the pledge Mathews introduced Ill. Sir Brent Bivens of Yaarab Shriners, Atlantic Georgia, and the members of his Divan who were visiting the meeting. Next the introduced the SASA officers as follows: Noble Calvin Gaddy, Secretary/Treasure (Oasis)r; Ill. Sir Dave Juergens (Kosair), 5th Vice President; Ill. Sir Doug Stalnaker (Nemesis) , 4th Vice President; Ill. Sir Greg Diffenderfer (Jericho), 3rd Vice President; Ill. Sir Steve Norris (Sudan), 2nd Vice President; Ill. Sir Steve Tucker (Jamil), 1st Vice President.
 
President Mathews introduced the following Imperial Officers in attendance: Past Imperial Potentate Al Madsen (Oasis); Past Imperial Potentate and Hospital Board Member Doug Maxwell (Moolah); Hospital Board Member Ill. Sir Anthony West (Zamora); Past Imperial Potentate and Shriners Hospital Chairman Dale Stauss (Kem); Imperial Assistant Rabban Jim Cain (Al Menah); Imperial Deputy Potentate Chris Smith (Wahabi); and Imperial Potentate Jerry Gantt (Arabia).
 
A motion was duly made, seconded and carried to dispense with the reading of the minutes of the previous meeting.
 
Ill. Sir Bill Harward (Oasis) Chairman of the Finance & Audit Committee reported that his examination of the books showed they were in order, that he had received an extension of filing the IRS report and that it would be filed timely. A motion was duly made, seconded and carried to accept the report.
 
Secretary/Treasurer Calvin Gaddy gave the financial report noting that at the beginning of the year (Oct. 1, 2015) the SASA checking account had $123,759.80 and the market rate account $55,780.34 for an opening balance of $179,540.14. The following transactions have taken place as of February 29,2016: Checks written in the amount of $9,738.43; deposits in the amount of $4,300.92; market account interest in the amount of $1859. Funds in the bank as of February 29, 2016 are, checking $120,736.43; market rate account $55,798.93 giving a total of the two accounts of $176,535.36. A motion was made to accept the report as read, duly seconded and carried.
 
The Time & Place Committee report was given by Ill. Sir Steve Tucker, Chairman as follows:

A motion was made, duly seconded and carried to accept this report.
 
Secretary/Treasurer Gaddy presented Noble Landy Thomas of Omar Shriners and Noble Donald M. Melton of Jamil Shriners for consideration for Emeritus Representative Status. Both Nobles have been elected and served for 10 years in the association. A motion was made to elect both to emeritus status, was duly seconded and carried.
 
Ill. Sir Edward Everhart, chairman of the Nominating Committee was absent and this report was given by Ill Sir Ray Fields. He noted that a resolution had been received by the committee submitting Assistant Rabban Ralph A. Calhoun II or Omar to the Nominating Committee for recommendation for the office of 5th Vice President of the South Atlantic Shrine Association. This was read for information only and will be presented to the representatives in September.
 
Next the candidates for Imperial office were presented and spoke to the body regarding their candidacy. Speaking was: Ill. Sir Chuck Pittman of Yaarab, PIP Doug Maxwell of Moolah and Ill. Sir Anthony West of Zamora, all candidates for the Hospital Board. Candidates for Imperial Outer Guard speaking were: Ill. Sir Richard Burke of Yaarab; Ill. Sir Kevin Costello of Cyprus; Ill. Sir Larry Leib of Moslem; and Ill. Sir Gale Bennington of Moolah.
 
President Mathews announced that the President’s Banquet scheduled for this evening had been moved to the hotel and would be held in this same room. He recognized the past presidents in attendance, they were: Ill. Sir Marion Dawson; Ill. Sir Bob Gary; Ill. Sir Fay Fields; Ill. Sir John Chaney; Ill. Sir Joe Scott; and Ill. Sir Don Ratliff.
 
President Mathews announced that Yaarab Shriners, Atlanta Georgia and Alhambra Shriners of Chattanooga, Tennessee wish the join the association. Following discussion a motion was made duly seconded and carried to accept both as members of the South Atlantic Shrine Association subject to this being approved by Imperial.
 
Director General Ellis discussed the golf tournament to be held Sept. 14th and changes that had been made. The tournament will be held at River Oak Golf Course and will be $50 per person. He also discussed the event to be held from 4 to 11 pm following the parade on the south end. The parade line up will be at 12:00 noon and will step off at 1:00 pm.

Imperial Sir Dale Stauss, Chairman of the Board, Shriners Hospitals spoke regarding “what is happening at Shriner Hospitals”. A video was viewed updating what is going on at the Cincinnati, Greenville and Lexington Hospitals with patients. Imperial Assistant Rabban Jim Cain thanked the association for coming to Nashville and announced the Imperial Session to be held in Nashville in 2019. Deputy Imperial Potentate Chris Smith spoke regarding this July’s Imperial Session to be held in Tampa.
 
Wrapping up the meeting was Imperial Potentate Jerry Gantt who gave up dates with the fraternity. During this he noted that legislation will be introduced dropping he office of Deputy Imperial Potentate which would shorten the Imperial Line.
 
There being no further business the meeting was closed at 3:45 pm.
