SOUTH ATLANTIC SHRINE ASSOCIATION

Minutes of the Business Meeting

September 24, 2015 – 12:00 pm

Landmark Resort, Myrtle Beach, SC

 

Director General Ill. Sir Brian Johnson, PP (Kerbela) called the meeting to order at 12 noon and introduced President Ill. Sir Edward Everhart, PP (Kerbela) who welcomed everyone to 42nd Annual Meeting of the South Atlantic Shrine Association. President Everhart called on Imperial Chaplain H. Lee Stallings (Arabia) who gave the invocation. President Everhart led the Shrine Pledge of Allegiance following the invocation.

President Everhart introduced the Myrtle Beach City Manager John Pedersen and thanked him for all his assistance in setting up the 2015 SASA Fall Festival. He introduced next Councilman W. Wayne Gray, who was representing Mayor John T. Rhodes who was out of the country. Mr. Gray welcomed the representatives to Myrtle Beach informing them that SASA was a very important event to the City of Myrtle Beach.

Representing Shriners Hospital for Children, Greenville, SC was Tracy McReynolds. Noble McReynolds stated he was representing Administrator Randy Romberger who was unable to attend this year. McReynolds gave the body an update on the Greenville Hospital and thanked all who work and support the hospital.

Next Ill. Sir Cliff Cantry welcomed the representatives to the jurisdiction of Omar Temple. Visiting Nobles and Officers were welcomed to the SASA Fall Festival by President Everhart.

President Everhart next introduce the officers of SASA for 2014-2015 as follows: Noble Calvin Gaddy, Secretary/Treasurer (Oasis); Ill. Sir Douglas Stalnaker, PP, 5th Vice President (Nemesis); Ill. Sir Gregory Diffenderfer, PP, 4th Vice President (Jericho); Ill. Sir Steve Norris, PP, 3rd Vice President (Sudan); Ill. Sir Stephen Tucker, PP, 2nd Vice President (Jamil); and Ill. Sir Mike Mathews, PP, 1st Vice President (Rizpah).

The Past South Atlantic Presidents were recognized by Everhart and ask to stand. Past President Ill. Sir Walter “Sticky” Burch (Oasis) was recognized and noted that he would be 97 years of age on October 21st.

The Imperial Officers present were introduced next as follows: Past Imperial Potentate George Mitchell (Ramesas); Past Imperial Potentate Nickolas “Nick” Thomas (Al Malaikah) ; Imperial Chaplain H. Lee Stalling (Arabia); Imperial Captain of the Guard Kenneth “Kenny” Craven (Omar); Imperial Potentate Jerry G. Gantt (Arabia).

Secretary Treasurer Calvin Gaddy call the roll of representatives from the 18 member Temples. He noted that all officers were in attendance and that 13 Past Presidents were in attendance.

One hundred thirty-seven representatives answered roll call.

A motion was duly made and seconded to dispense with the reading of the minutes from the spring meeting in Pigeon Forge.

Ill. Sir Bill Harward (Oasis) chairman of the Finance & Audit Committee noted the he had examined the books from the spring meeting and had found all to be in order. A motion was made, duly seconded and passed to approve the report.

1st Vice President Ill. Sir Mike Mathews, chairman of the Time & Place Committee, reported the location of future meetings:

2016 Spring Nashville, TN March 17-19
Fall Myrtle Beach, SC Sept. 15-17
2017 Spring Columbia, SC March 31-April 1
Fall Myrtle Beach, SC Sept. 14-17
2018 Spring New Bern, NC March 21-24
Fall Myrtle Beach, SC Sept. 19-22

A motion was made, duly seconded and passed to approve this report for future meetings.

Ill. Sir Charlie Lynch, PP, Chairman of the Nominating Committee reported the following chosen as nominees by his committee: President Ill. Sir Mike Mathews; 1st Vice President Ill. Sir Steve Tucker; 2nd Vice President Steve Norris; 3rd Vice President Gregory Diffenderfer; 4th Vice President Douglas Stalnaker; Secretary/Treasurer Calvin Gaddy. The floor was opened for additional nominations, if any. A motion was made, duly seconded and carried that the nominations be closed and the officer nominated by elected by acclimation.

Ill Sir Lynch reported that the Nomination Committee that Ill. Sir Dave L. Juergens (Kosair) had been elected to add to the officer line as 5th Vice President. The floor was opened for additional nominations. A motion was made, duly seconded and carried to close the nominations and elect Ill. Sir Juergens by acclimation. 5th Vice President Juergens was invited to the head table to sit with the officers.

Ill. Sir Mike Mathews presented his budgets for the spring and fall; a motion was made, duly seconded and carried to approve both budgets. Secretary/Treasurer Gaddy presented the budget to operate the secretary/treasurer’s office. A motion was made, duly seconded and carried to approve this budget.

Announcements were made by Director General Ill. Sir Brian Johnson.

Ill. Sir Steve Tucker spoke not as an officer of SASA, but as an individual on behalf of Ill. Sir Richard Burke (Yaarab), a candidate for Imperial Outer Guard.

Imperial Potentate Jerry Gantt address the body noting that the SASA parade in now the largest parade in Shrinedom. He recognized both present and passed members of those who serve or have served on the board of any of our hospitals. He reported that Imperial will again have a Member Seminar at the spring meeting of SASA, which will be held in Nashville on Friday, March 18, 20016. He noted the Special Order No. 4 had been rescinded as General Order No. 1 had been issued this week. He thanked the 18 member Temples of SASA for all they are doing for the fraternity and for the hospitals. He thanked the Past Imperial Potentates for attending SASA.

There being no future business the meeting was adjourned at 2:32 pm.
