SOUTH ATLANTIC SHRINE ASSOCIATION

Minutes of the Business Meeting

September 19, 2013, 1:00 pm

Springmaid Beach Resort, Myrtle Beach, SC

 

President Doyle Simmons (Oasis) welcomed everyone to the annual meeting of the South Atlantic Shrine Association and introduced Director General John T. (Tom) Price PP (Oasis) to conduct the meeting.

Director General Price called for the advancing of the colors which was done by the Oasis Patrol Color Guard. Following the posting of the colors those in attendance gave the Shrine Pledge of Allegiance. SASA Chaplain John Stanley, PP (Oasis) gave the invocation.

Mayor John T. Rhodes welcomed the Shriners to Myrtle Beach and told them how grateful the city was to have SASA once again choose Myrtle. Omar Potentate James S. “Jimmy” Day welcomed the SASA Nobles to the jurisdiction of Omar. Visiting Divan members and Nobles from other associations were welcomed by Director Price.

The SASA officers for 2012-2013 were introduced as follows:
Secretary/Treasurer Noble W. Calvin Gaddy (Oasis)
5th Vice President Steve M. Norris, PP (Sudan)
4th Vice President Stephen G. Tucker, CR (Jamil)
3rd Vice President George M. “Mike” Matthews, PP (Rizpah)
2nd Vice President Edward L. Everhart, PP (Kerbela)
1st Vice President Donald L. Ratliff, PP (Kazim)
President Doyle C. Simmons, PP (Oasis)

Randy Romberger, Administrator of Shriners Hospital for Children, Greenville was introduced and brought greeting from directors and staff of that unit. Romberger gave a report on what Greenville has accomplish since he last spoke to SASA.

Director General Price introduced the Imperial Officers who were in attendance. Attending this session of SASA was: Past Imperial Potentate Alan W. Madsen (Oasis); Imperial Oriental Guide Jim L. Cain, Sr. (Al Menah); and Imperial Potentate John A. Cinatto (Murat).

Chaplain John Stanley next conducted the annual Memorial Service for those Nobles who had been called by the Black Camel since last year. Each member Temple Potentate participated by lighting a candle for these who had passed in his Temple.

Director General Price called on Secretary/Treasurer Gaddy at this point to call the roll of the representatives of the South Atlantic Shrine Association. A quorum was present to conduct the business of the association.

A motion was duly made and seconded to and passed to dispense with the reading of the minutes of the Spring Meeting held in Greensboro, NC.

Gaddy next gave the treasurer’s report giving the funds we started the year with, deposits and checks written for expenses of the association since the beginning of the SASA year. A motion was made and duly seconded and carried to approve the report.

Past Potentate William M. “Bill” Harward (Oasis) chairman of the Finance and Audit Committee reported that he had found the books for the 2011-2012 year to be in order and that our 990 had been filed with IRS in a timely manner. He stated that he had reviewed the report of the Spring Meeting and found everything to be in order. A motion was made, duly seconded and carried to approve his report.

Ill. Sir Donald Ratliff, chairman of the Time & Place Committee gave his report noting when the future meeting of the association will be held. The report was as follows:

2014 Spring Roanoke, VA March 28-30
Fall Myrtle Beach, SC September 18-21
2015 Spring Pigeon Forge, TN March 20-21
Fall Myrtle Beach, SC September 17-19
2016 Spring Nashville, TN March 18-19
Fall Myrtle Beach, SC September 22-24

A motion was made, duly seconded and carried to approve this report establishing the location of the meetings for the next three years’

Past President Ray Fields, PP, chairman of the Nominating Committee reported that the committee recommended that the following be elected for the ensuing year:

Secretary/Treasurer W. Calvin Gaddy (Oasis)
4th Vice President Steve M. Norris, PP (Sudan)
3rd Vice President Stephen G. Tucker, CR (Jamil)
2nd Vice President George M. “Mike” Matthews, PP (Rizpah)
1st Vice President Edward L. Everhart, PP (Kerbela)
President Donald L. Ratliff, PP (Kazim)

The floor was then opened for any further nominations; a motion was made and duly seconded and carried to close the nominations and elect the above by acclamation.

Fields next reported that the nominating committee recommended Ill. Sir Gregory C. Diffenderfer Potentate of Jericho be elected 5th Vice President. Nominations were opened and a motion was made, seconded and carried to elect Diffenderfer by acclamation. The newly elected 5th Vice President was invited to join the other officers at the head table.

President Elect Ratliff next presented his budgets for the ensuing year. Copies attached. A motion was made, seconded and carried to approve the 2014 spring and fall budgets.

Secretary/Treasurer Gaddy presented the operating budget for the ensuing year. Copy attached. A motion was made, duly seconded and carried to approve the operating budget.

Ill. Sir Kenneth G. “Kenny” Craven, Past Potentate of Omar spoke to those in attendance regarding his candidacy for Imperial Outer Guard.

Imperial Officers Oriental Guide Jim L. Cain, Sr. and Imperial Potentate John R. Cinotto brought timely information to the delegates.

There being no further business the meeting was closed at 3:19 pm.
